WS1 2D/3D Seismic Geomorphology Workshop

Since 20 years, improvement of 3D seismic acquisition, processing and visualisation have strongly modified our view of buried sedimentary systems. More specifically, 3D seismic amplitude maps can be use like seabeams on present day ocean and allow for analyzing past seascapes or like subaerial landscapes with satellite images.
It is of primary importance for geoscientists to have the basic background on the new Seismic Geomorphology techniques and have images of the most common sedimentary environments. Seismic Geomorphology can also be applied to carbonates or structural analysis, however this two-days-workshop will focus on Siliciclastic Depositional Systems. We will review depositionnal environments from aeolian, fluvial, delta to deep water by comparing 3D attribute maps and modern systems views from satellite. Individual setting will be approached by progressive downsizing from large scale such as deep sea fan down to the individual elements, such as canyons, channels, lobes and MTC for example. The course will also include practical applications and demos on an in-house workstation developed by Total. Attendees will be welcome to share ideas and results during a one hour slot organised daily for short presentations.

WS2 How to write a successful research proposal

Having a fantastic idea for a new avenue of ground-breaking research is a wonderful feeling. Then comes the reality – you are going to need someone to fund this! We all know that feeling of being faced with a blank funding proposal template.
Well, help is at hand.
During this lunchtime workshop you will learn from the experts – those who review the proposals and those who write successful proposals.

WS3 How to write a successful paper for sedimentology or the depositional record

Your project is completed. The results are in and the outcomes are, frankly, fantastic! It’s now time to share your research with the wider community – it’s time to publish. Writing your first manuscripts for publication can be a daunting task.

• How do I select an appropriate journal for my topic?
• How should I organise the manuscript? How long should it be?
• What are the key elements that the editors are going to look for?
• What can I do to increase visibility on search pages?
• I am not confident whilst writing in English – is there any help?
• These are just some of the plethora of questions raised by new authors.

Come and get the answers. This lunchtime workshop will be presented by the Chief Editors of Sedimentology and The Depositional Record. During the workshop you will learn exactly what it takes to turn your outstanding research in to an outstanding paper.
